Swine flu pandemic
As you may be aware following the outbreak of Swine Flu, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has now declared a pandemic that is an epidemic which affects all people, in this case the virus ‘Swine Flu’.
During this time we hope to continue to deliver services as usual, but will be closely following advice issued by the WHO and the government and in particular that contained in the leaflet that has been issued by government which can be found on our website. Please do read the leaflet if you have not done so already.
We would encourage you to assist staff at the association during this period by following the advice given in the Swine Flu leaflet and letting us know if you or a member of your household has the virus if you are expecting a visit from our staff or representatives/contractors or anyone else working on behalf of People First. This will help us to ensure that we take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. (The Swine Flu leaflet is also available in other languages, large print, audio and British sign laguage video formats on the NHS website.)
We will keep you notified of any changes at the office particularly if relation to service delivery if we feel this is likely to be adversely affected by staff absence.
If you wish to discuss this or any concerns you have about the virus please speak to your housing officer or support worker.
For the latest news and advice on the pandemic - visit the the NHS website.
To find out more about how a pandemic differs from ordinary flu, you can also download the Pandemic Flu leaflet. This leaflet is also available in other languages on the Department of Health's website.
New volunteer befriending services in Tameside and Rochdale
People First continues to grow with two new services offering support from People First trained volunteer befrienders to existing service users and those on our waiting lists.
Investor In People review
People First passed its 2008 Investor in People review with flying colours.
In their report the assessor states:
"People First exists to ensure that its service users and tenants are empowered to access opportunities and services that will improve their lives. This commitment to equality of opportunity runs through the whole organisation and is applied to staff as well as customers."
18 from the 52 members of staff were interviewed in May 2008. Here is one of the quotes from staff the assessor chose to put in the report:
“The whole organisation is about putting people first – whether that is through helping them with drug addiction, supporting them to maintain their tenancy or helping them to gain housing and employment after leaving prison. We help people to help themselves.”
The assessor notes that this ethos also extends to the treatment of staff at People First:
"There is an open and relaxed approach within the business, that encourages people to try things, take ownership of their roles, and sometimes, take risks, in order to achieve the desired outcomes. Everyone interviewed feels that they are trusted, have autonomy and decision making responsibility within their roles."
